MAY CONTINUES THE TREND OF THE PAST FEW MONTHS WITH COOLER AND DRIER THAN NORMAL WEATHER. ----------------------------------------- FROM: Bob Weisman, Earth Sciences - St. Cloud State University SUBJECT: May 1997 Continues Cool and Dry Spring St. Cloud May 1997 and Spring 1997 St. Cloud Weather Summary The growing season dry conditions continued in May 1997 at St. Cloud, with only 1.28 inches of rain falling, a little more than a third of the normal amount. The spring (March through May) total of 3.11 inches was the 8th driest in 104 years of St. Cloud records. Significant rainfall was nearby, staying to the south on the 13th and 14th while St. Cloud only received .08 inches. .35 inches of rain from a slow moving system over Iowa kept May from dropping into one of the 10 driest Mays on record. Spring warmth was also slow to arrive, although this May was arguably sunnier than last year. The average temperature of 51.1 F was more than 5 1/2 degrees below normal and was the 10th coldest May on record. 70+ degree highs were spread liberally throughout the month, but the 75 barrier was only broken 4 times during the month and 80 was only hit once. The last frost occurred on May 21. The overall spring average temperature of 39.1 was more than 3 degrees below normal. =========================================================================== MAY 1997 STATISTICS MAY 1997 NORMAL TEMPERATURE Average High 63.6 68.4 Average Low 38.6 43.4 Average Temp 51.1* 55.9 Warmest high temperature 83 on the 31st Coldest high temperature 47 on the 13th Mildest low temperature 54 on the 23th Coldest low temperature 24 on the 13th *10th Coldest May in St. Cloud history RAINFALL (in) 1.28 3.16 Most in 24 hours 0.38 on the 7th RECORDS SET: Coldest low temperature record: 24 on the 13th (tie-1953) SPRING STATISTICS SPRING 1997 NORMAL Average Temperature 39.1 42.3 Total Melted Precip(in) 3.11** 6.92 **8th driest spring in St. Cloud history (104 yrs)
